Reduce energy and save money

RUMM have an excellent track record that has taken them to greater heights with their Energy Management Services and Systems. RUMM offer a first class world renowned service and are committed to business energy reduction. RUMM take their commitment seriously with expanding to the USA, opening up world class offices. I found this recent case study by which RUMM have assisted Doncaster, Blaenavon achieved excellent results in reducing energy consumption and savings.

The Client

Doncasters is a leading international engineering group. It manufactures precision components and assemblies for the aerospace, industrial gas turbines, specialist automotive fasteners and petrochemical markets. Doncasters excels at working with alloys and metals that are difficult to shape and form.

The Brief

With an energy bill of £1.4million at the Doncasters’ Blaenavon site, RUMM was asked to look at ways of reducing energy consumption thus improving profits. The main focus of this was to design and install an automatic monitoring and targeting system (aM&T) to monitor consumption.

The Method

RUMM installed an aM&T system which provided Doncasters with half hourly data in order to identify those areas where savings could be made.

To ensure everyone was able to understand how the system worked and where the plant was using excess energy, the RUMM team worked closely with the incumbent energy team, in order to identify how electricity and gas were being distributed and the key areas in which they were being used.

The Results

By evaluating opportunities for savings within the thermal efficiency field, and optimising ‘waste heat’ to minimise temperature dissipation, RUMM was able to bring energy consumption down by 27%, giving the Blaenavon plant a saving of £1million over 2 years, against a 40% increase in sales.

This success contributed to Doncasters receiving an Energy Management Award. Such was the success of the work in Blaenavon, Doncasters also asked RUMM to install its energy management solution at four other plants in the UK. Since installation, a total of £3.6million has been saved in energy consumption costs, equating to 11,800 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

Why it worked

Using RUMM’s technology and energy management expertise allowed Doncasters to clearly identify those areas of high energy consumption and focus its efforts in order to set specific objectives that reduced energy consumption. As well as looking at existing manufacturing methods, the company was able to test, prior to installation, proposed new systems to evaluate future energy consumption.

“The service we have had from RUMM has been first class. Such was the project’s initial success, we installed at a further four sites and continue to look at other sites where RUMM’s intelligent monitoring can be used”

Find out how to run your marquee company

We love DIY Marquees blog posts, they are not only informative but make an interesting read from the experts who have been in the industry for many years; having tried and tested every area of marquee for sale business.

I found these interesting articles especially for those that would like to set up their own small marquees for sale business.

Why are most marquee linings ivory?

In the UK marquee industry now just about all professional marquee linings are ivory, this has come about from years of experience and customer feedback not just from us but from all lining manufacturers in the country.

From a customer’s point of view ivory just adds a touch of class to the marquee, if you have two lined marquees side by side one with white and one ivory customers choose ivory every single time – whether they go for flat/shaped, pleated or ruched is personal opinion and another matter altogether!

From a hirers point of view ivory is much lower maintenance than white, marks and creases show up far more on white than ivory. It also ages better than white – we used to have 10 year old ivory linings right next to brand new ones without any issue. Try putting  a 10 year old white t-shirt next to a brand new one and see the difference!

The only down side to ivory used to be there were many many different shades of it from different material suppliers in the marquee lining industry, fortunately in the last 10 years or so everyone has settled on a similar shade generally referred to as mid-ivory.

That’s why 99% of professional marquee linings are ivory now.

Especially for marquee companies for sale

Check list for completed marquees

Its good practice when you’ve finished a marquee (and before the event) to have a check list, one copy for the customer and one for you.

What goes on a check list is entirely up to you but here’s some suggestions:

  • Sign to say that they are happy with the marquee. It won’t cover you completely, they may find something and call you back but it does help to have a paper trail should anyone try to take action against you after the event (I’ve never heard of this happening but it’s simply good practice).
  • Sign to say that all furniture is there (by sign I mean one signature for everything)
  • Sign to agree to take responsibility for all of the equipment (unless you have separate insurance/damage waiver).
  • Sign to say they have been shown how to use any marquee heating and/or lighting.
  • A note to say where any equipment can be plugged in (and not to plug in anywhere else)
  • A note asking for any decorations around the marquee not to be attached using staples or non-removable tape.
  • A note mentioning no metalwork should be removed and side panels only removed if good weather.
  • A note asking for pets (dogs) not to be allowed in to the marquee. There were a couple of occasions I can remember finding presents from the family dog, they were not pleasant experiences!

It’s also good practice to have the emergency contact number on the bottom.

Note this is a check list for the customer (they have a copy, you have a copy) which may be separate from your own erectors check-list, something the team leader might fill in ensuring everything meets the required standards. Flooring is well fixed down, all straps are done on the outside of the marquee, no lighting or heating could come in to contact with PVC/lining, furniture all laid out, dance floor laid flat etc etc.

For those who are starting out this may all understandably be a bit of overkill. If you’re in charge and just putting a 6x6m shell of a marquee then that’s fine. The above should always be the aspiration though, as you get bigger, as your equipment becomes more diverse, the jobs become bigger and when more of the responsibility is delegated to others having check lists is simply good practice.

Some see setting up a marquee hire business as very easy. Others see setting up any business as a potential headache. At DIY Marquees we work very hard helping people set up marquee hire companies by taking a lot of the stress and worry out but promoting good practices so they can thrive in the long term.

The Real Meal Revolution book

Are you a banter determined to lose excessive weight the easy way? Find some banting recipes that will help you along the way with banting healthy eating.

Image result for images of fruit and veg Image result for images of healthy eating Image result for images of healthy eating

What we have found is that after a while a few of the ‘newly-lean’ reach a frustrating plateau. Don’t be disheartened, you are not alone! Sally-Ann Creed, The Real Meal Revolution’s Banting Nutrition Therapist has had heaps of experience with Banters who run into this problem.

She comments, “The first thing one needs to remember is that weight loss is unique to every person. A book, and The Real Meal Revolution book in particular, can be an amazing help but 20% of the time, you’ll need a closer look from a professional. There are over a million things that could be standing in your way that you are not even aware of. It could be as simple as the type of yoghurt you are religiously eating to keep up your fat intake. Something you’re allergic to might be pumping up that tyre around your waist. The speed bumps are endless.”

Keeping this in mind, Sally-Ann has greased her 20 year-old arsenal of weight loss weapons to create a simple and easy to follow set of rules.

The ten commandments

  1. Eat enough animal fat. This is central to banting. Animal fat DOES NOT make you fat, and you need to eat it. Small amounts at a time make you feel full and stop you from overeating.
  2. Eat enough vegetables. Vegetables should be your bulk-food and this means that you must try to have veggies with every meal. Green vegetables are the best – low in carbs and full of nutrients. There are a great many different vegetables on the Green List. Make sure that you have variety in your diet.
  3. Don’t snack. For the first week or so of banting, that is, when you are going carb-cold-turkey, you may need to snack periodically, if only to keep your sanity. Make sure that you have banting-friendly snacks at hand. Remember that it is essential to have a good breakfast to set you up for the day. If you aren’t losing those hunger pangs, increase the animal fat in your diet.
  4. Don’t lie to yourself. Eating carbs that are perceived to be proteins, like legumes, baked beans, peanuts and quinoa, will undermine your banting attempts. Pay attention to the Red List – the forbidden foods. Quite simply, a red-listed item is either toxic or will cause weight gain. Foods on the Orange List must be eaten in moderation, with careful attention to quantity and carb content.
  5. Don’t over- or under-eat. New Banters get nervous about the idea of not snacking and tend to go overboard at mealtimes. Don’t worry about this. As long as there is enough fat in your diet, you will soon, without effort, be eating moderately-sized meals that will carry you through to the next meal. Never force food down your throat. When you are full, stop eating! If you don’t feel like lunch, don’t have it.
  6. Don’t eat too much protein. We cannot stress this enough. Banting is NOT high-protein eating. No more than 80 to 90 g of meat or fish is what you should be eating with any meal. [But don’t be over-fastidious, to the extent that you feel deprived. If, on occasion, you eat at a steakhouse, choose the smaller option on the menu and don’t fret. What is more, it is quite unnecessary to chop the pointy bit off the chicken breast!] Remember, the main thrust of banting is to cut the carbs from one’s diet and increase your fat intake. The consumption of proteins should be unaffected or even reduced.
  7. Be alert! Many ostensibly ‘healthy’ products and ready-made meals are full of carbs. Before you buy something, check the label. Five grams of carbs is the cut-off. If the carb content is higher, don’t buy it. Also, avoid any product that professes to be ‘low-fat’. The chances are that it will be loaded with carbs to compensate for the inevitable loss of flavour. When you start scrutinising product labels you will realise why it has in the past been so hard to lose weight.
  8. Avoid too many fruits and nuts. Fruit is full of natural fructose (the substance that makes it sweet). Fructose is perceived to be ‘good sugar’ but for a Banter there is no such thing. Sugar is sugar regardless of its perceived ‘goodness’ and, while natural sugar is far preferable to refined sugar, its consumption needs to be strictly controlled. Of all the fruits, berries are best but even berries need to be restricted in some cases. The nuts on the Green List are low in carbs and great snack foods, but you must not go overboard. Nuts may cause weight gain in some individuals, especially women, so must be restricted to an occasional small handful. Macadamias are best as they are loaded with healthy fat and almonds are packed with fibre and goodness. Always choose raw nuts in preference to commercial roasted nuts, as natural is always better.
  9. Control your dairy. Although dairy is good for you, it does contain carbs and can be a stumbling block for some people. When you start banting, avoid eating too much dairy. In other words, limit your cheese intake as much as possible, use whole milk and double cream yoghurt instead of low fat choices and have cream in your coffee. Butter is always good.
  10. Be strong!

THE ELEVENTH COMMANDMENT! Banting warnings and banting health risks

Watch what you drink. We’re faced with a dilemma here. We’re trying to promote health and overall well-being so promoting booze is not in our interest as alcohol is highly toxic. Dry wines, most spirits, low energy beers and a few other drinks are safe BUT that is only from a carb perspective. Alcopops, normal beer, any spirit mixer or cocktail will halt any weight loss you’re experiencing. It’s easy for us to promote low-carb alcoholic beverages but one needs to remember that a low-carb 5% vol. beer is still 5% toxic. Alcohol is also really good at draining motivation, lowering inhibitions, impairing driving ability and and and… So we leave drinking up to you. Consider the Eleventh Commandment our “drinking disclaimer”. You’re a grown-up and how much booze you choose to drink is up to you.

DIY Marquees raising marquees to new heights

the commercial diy marquee range

Options for marquee lighting. There are many different marquee lighting for sale and each come with their own pros and cons. The most popular option in commercial marquee for sale are chandeliers (gold or otherwise), they give a good quantity and quality of light and from an erectors point of view relatively easy to fit which means they can also be used and fitted by any domestic user.

Uplighters and marquee spotlights are becoming more popular but require a professional to fit and so unsuitable for the DIY market. Similarly buying lightweight globe lights whilst excellent in small walkways or gazebos are not powerful enough to light marquees of any serious size as each bulb is limited to 25 watts.

marquee chandeliers

Strings of festoon lighting offer a perfect solution for those wanting to light any size of marquee. They give flexibility in the power of lighting supplied but can also be used discretely behind an interior roof lining. They are available for sale with a dimmer system and can usually take any dimmable bulb up to 100W for greatest flexibility.
